At its worst, you never find the entrance or the place that you were looking for (because there is only one entrance, or because you are looking in the wrong part of the map), so you run out of food/drink/energy, and you have to end your little expedition with little to show for it. In this game, however, because the map is so linear in concept, and because the map is so small, this doesn't happen. So even if you don't find thing A, your time and the resources you devoted in a particular trip make the expedition worth it. With the first game, there were many opportunities to incidentally stumble upon many interesting things while looking for thing A. It feels like Dark Souls 2 vs Dark Souls 1 if it makes sense.Īpart from preference with regards to game/design type, this becomes an actual problem, because there is little guidance when you need to find specific places. I don't have a problem with the map being smaller, but with the linearity of it. This game feels much more linear in its exploration. The first game had many different paths to take to discover a biome, interconnected biomes, various depths at various places.

There is an obvious design change, giving emphasis to story, but unfortunately for me they dialed back the exploration a lot, in order to facilitate this. I haven't been getting the same feelings with this one. The first game was one of my favorite games of all time. it's really more of a "I wasn't planning on sleeping for a few hours anyway" kind of game, you know? Both because it's so easy to get sucked in and lose a few hours, and because as soon as I enter a new biome I nearly shit myself finding some new creature I'd never seen before and would be perfectly content to not see again. I'd boot it up now and get that last lithium but. I'm still real early going, obviously, but I'm really liking that this one isn't nearly as scary as the first game, so I can actually share the experience with my young daughter (after I've vetted an area to make sure it isn't scary), and she's been having a ball watching me pilot my Seatruck into walls and get my equipment snatched by sea monkeys.

I've managed to build the Seatruck and some base (with a moonpool), and I'm one lithium away from getting the prawn suit (with drill arm and jump jet upgrade to boot). I know one of the critiques is that the map feels much smaller, which actually is nice from my perspective as you don't have nearly as long just driving through open water hoping nothing big is lurking just below you in the depths. But I've dived in, and I'm really enjoying it so far. Just started Below Zero a couple days ago I was a huge fan of the original Subnautica but I was hesitant to start this one, I think because I heard it wasn't as good and I didn't want it to sully the experience I had with a game that I consider one of the best of the last five years.
