This would be the situation with copies of copies. But it will totally butcher the conversion if there are fine dots around or near the notes, rests, and staves. SmartScore-X will make really good conversions of sharp clean scores. This is a royal pain.īest you can do is to use Finale to convert the file to MIDI type 1 and import into Overture to make it serviceable.

SmartScore-X also makes some decisions on how to mix up the staves on some scores, so you might have to move some note/rest data around. So you have to have Finale to convert the file to MIDI file type 0/1/2 or to XML for import into another program. The other not so nice feature is that it doesn't export to any usable format except XML or a Finale Score via the Finale program, which you must have installed. You won't believe how the score components are splattered all over the screen. And when you open up the resulting file in Finale (your only option) have your dark glasses on. There will be numerous artifacts from the conversion to electronic copy that you can't touch in any way, not even to delete them. This program has some great features, just not where it counts. It will allow you to scan single pages and aggregate them later or to scan multiple pages together. I finally gave up and took the shortest path to get the score into Overture to work with the data. Now, if the editor controls were intuitive and worked as advertized, it would be amazing. There is one nice feature, though, they have an upper and lower window where you can compare the original scanned material against the converted score, staff-by-staff. SmartScore-X has an editing language that is at least 2.5x as bad as using Finale, and it doesn't even follow its own rules (personal opinion). Don't spend the $150 for the upgrade unless you don't swear easily. I bought SmartScore-X Pro as an upgrade to the version of SmartScore shipped with Finale (I don't actually use Finale) and it is very good on crisp clean scores.
